The nod for Grove Farm Team of the Week goes to the Waimea High School girls volleyball program who, led by the strong leadership and play from its seniors — Gabrielle Peleras, Keana Silva, and Leiko Yamauchi, piloted the varsity Menehune through a five-set slugfest — 10-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, and 16-14 — over the Kauai High School program that celebrated Senior Night for eight of its graduating seniors who were playing their final home game in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball season before an overflow crowd that jammed the Kauai High School gym, Friday night.

In addition to stellar play from the varsity girls, the Menehune junior varsity also swept its series — 25-16, 25-12, and 25-23 with the victory being inspired by the appearance of its No. 7 — Shyann Freitas — who was wheeled into the jammed Red Raider gym after returning from Oahu where she was recovering from an accident.

Waimea, currently leading the standings after taking Round 1, has two more games on its calendar. They face the Voyagers, Tuesday at the Wilcox Gymnasium before returning to the Clem Gomes Gym, Friday for its Senior Night. Junior varsity games start at 5 p.m. with the varsity contests getting underway no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
