The Island School cross country program earns the Grove Farm Team of the Week honor after the Voyagers pushed runners into the top positions of both the girls and boys races, Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country championship meet at the Island School campus.

Under the coaching of Dr. Eric Wortmann, the Voyagers continued to reap honors as its boys team went on to capture the team title by placing its five scoring runners in the Top Seven, led by Matthew Vickers who finished first in the boys’ race. Jaden DeSouza and Ella Beck led the Voyagers girls team, the two lady Voyagers running neck-and-neck through most of the three-mile course before DeSouza pulled ahead in the last half mile to finish ahead of Beck.

However, the effort fell just three points short of the title after Kauai High School girls went on to take the girls title when all five of its scoring runners finished in the Top 15. For Wortmann, coaching for nine years at Island School, the boys title is the second consecutive title, and the first time he’s had the top individual finishers for both races. The Voyager men, Kauai High School women, and other state qualifiers head to the Central Oahu Recreational Park for the Honolulu Marathon Hawaii High School Athletic Association state meet on Oahu next Saturday (Oct. 27).
