This is the final Grove Farm Team of the Week pick for the 2018-2019 school year – graduation is coming!
Congratulations to the Waimea High School baseball team on earning the No. 4 seed for the Wally Yonamine Hawaii High School Foundation baseball championships, Division II that will unfold on Kauai, this year starting on Thursday and continuing through the championship game, Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
The Menehune, with first year coach Chad Delanoza at the helm, earned the eligibility to represent the Kauai Interscholastic Federation after clinching the KIF championship during the playoff game, April 30 against Kapaa High School who earlier in the year had taken the first round crown. During the KIF championship game, Waimea chased the Warriors through six innings, and with its final three outs facing them, Cory Goias-Soares’ bat conked into a three-RBI double for the 5-3 go-ahead and the KIF crown.
Menehune pitcher Tysson Unciano picked up the win on the mound, going the full distance with four strikeouts, a walk, and one batter being hit by a pitch. He allowed nine hits for Kapaa’s three runs. Waimea picked up its five runs on nine hits with Goias-Soares finishing two-for-three in the batters’ box with four runners batted in. With the KIF crown in hand, Waimea will face the Molokai Farmers, Thursday evening in the nightcap at Vidinha Stadium. The first pitch goes off at 7 p.m.
Mahalo nui to Dennis Fujimoto of The Garden Island newspaper for these write ups every week! The Grove Farm Foundation will make its "Team of the Week" contribution to each of the four Kaua'i high schools at the 3rd Quarter Chamber of Commerce event in September. More details to come for that event.
