Grove Farm Team of the Week honors go to the Kauai High School tennis program that finished the two-day qualifying tournament by securing eight of the 12 Kauai Interscholastic Federation positions available for the HMSA Hawaii High School Athletic Association tennis championships that will contest May 9 through 11 at the Mauna Lani Sports & Fitness Club.
Led by Miya Reese, unseeded in the qualifying tournament, the Red Raider girls singles player went on to defeat the top seeded Haven Sadler of Island School, and the tournament’s No. 4 seed, Kiara Dolino before meeting the second seeded Sydney Nice of Kapaa in the finals. Reese went on to claim the singles title, and one of the Kauai spots to the state.
The top two seeds in the Girls Doubles — Tia Fulks and Anna Burkman, and Hoku Iseri and Katherine O’Neill round out the girls’ representation. They are joined by the tournament’s No. 3 seed in Boys Singles, Kai Villanueva who earlier upset the No. 2 seed, Mason Buick of Kapaa in the semifinals. That set up the finals showdown against Island School’s Sasha Rovinsky, the top seed for Boys Singles. Rovinsky took the finals, 6-0, 6-0, but both players will advance to the state tournament.
Micah Matsunaga and Trevor Carbonel round out the eight Kauai state qualifiers, the second seeded qualifiers dropping their final match to the top seeded Breicen Medina and Fred Ryl Adella of Waimea High School.
